His Grace Conquers the Hurt of a Little Girl | His Grace
Hannah was a daddy’s girl. She loved her father but began to notice how he became more and more distant. Soon, he was never around. When Hannah was nine years old, her mother sat her down to confirm what she already knew: something was seriously wrong.
Hannah said she felt “like that moment when you lean back on the two legs of a chair—just at that tipping point when you lose control and start to fall.”
For the next half dozen years, she felt uncertain—in free fall.
She found comfort in her mother’s love, but it never seemed to fill the anguish. “I had to pray to get through the next hour,” she said. “I learned to speak with Heavenly Father like a friend.”
Her father was released from prison after serving 18 months for pain medication abuse. “After hitting rock bottom, he changed in prison,” Hannah said. But forgiving him came hard. There never was a moment when the past was forgotten and everything was easy, she said. “It took time to trust him again.”
Now looking back, Hannah says she is much better than most might expect. Through the hurt and tears, she said: “Jesus Christ is real. You may not feel whole, but if you hold on, things can be okay again. Things get better.”
