A leaked audio tape revealed Victoria Nuland planning the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Ukraine in February 2014. Shortly after, the president of Ukraine was removed and replaced by Nuland’s puppet. And it was all done with the help of the neoconservative movement and the support of then-Vice President Joe Biden.

The U.S.-led coup led to the outbreak of an eight-year civil war between western Ukraine and eastern Ukraine. A direct consequence of that was Russia’s invasion earlier this year, which, has caused a total realignment of the world order.

The Ukraine war is in many ways the swan song of the American neocon movement. While the many other wars they have championed have cost hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of lives, as well as trillions of dollars, those foolhardy interventions did not fundamentally change the global balance of power.

Neocon misadventures in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria brought havoc and despair to those countries but it did not result in any big geopolitical shifts. The Ukraine war changes all that; it has caused a massive shift away from U.S. hegemony coupled with an ominous rise in the fortunes of China—and it was entirely avoidable.
