A Good Samaritan
In the 10th chapter of Luke in the New Testament, the Savior received two questions from a lawyer with unfriendly intentions. The first question was, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” The Savior reminded him of what was written in the scriptures: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” The lawyer followed up with a second question: “Who is my neighbour?” (verses 25–29). Instead of answering the question directly, the Savior guided the lawyer to answer his own question with the parable of the good Samaritan.
The Savior teaches that everyone is our neighbor. His teachings and personal example of kindness and mercy to others are just as applicable today as they were during His lifetime. Opportunities, large and small, to be modern-day good Samaritans surround us every day. Are we willing to be inconvenienced to help someone in need? Do we hesitate? President Thomas S. Monson once said, “Unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives” (“What Have I Done for Someone Today?” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2009, 85).
When we willingly extend ourselves beyond what is easy to do, the reward is a joyful unity with our Heavenly Father; our Savior, Jesus Christ; and one another.
