According to Henry Louis Gates Jr. and The New York Times, the original civil rights movement died on April 4, 1968, with the death of Martin Luther King Jr. Really? Also, the contemporary civil rights movement unfolded directly in response to the death of Trayvon Martin. Really? Does this mean the election of Barack Obama to the White House had nothing to do with civil rights? Well, even Obama has more recently embraced reparations and the idea that discrimination is “still part of our DNA.” But remember when he said, “There is not a black America, and a white America, and Latino America, and Asian America. There is the United States of America”?
