France’s Raphaël Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament, stirred controversy by suggesting the U.S. return the Statue of Liberty, claiming it no longer reflects American values. During a party convention, he declared, “Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” as a symbolic critique of U.S. policies under the current administration. His remarks ignited a transatlantic spat, with Glucksmann arguing the statue’s ideals of freedom are no longer upheld by the U.S. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt fired back, saying, “Absolutely not,” and delivered a smackdown: “It’s only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now, so they should be very grateful to our great country.” Leavitt ended the press briefing with a list of all the crimes committed by Tren de Aragua here in America, underscoring the administration’s stance on security and national pride.
