What Are the Book of Mormon Gold Plates? | Now You Know

The gold plates contained the teachings of prophets in ancient America. The teachings were etched on gold plates in an ancient reformed Egyptian language and later translated by Joseph Smith into English as the Book of Mormon.

In 1820, a young boy named Joseph Smith prayed to know which church was true. In answer to his prayer, he was visited by God and Jesus Christ. In 1823, the Angel Moroni visited Joseph Smith and told him about a sacred record on gold plates that were buried in a hill by Joseph’s home.

The gold plates were seen by Joseph Smith and a few other witnesses. From their accounts, the plates were 8 inches long, about 6 or 7 inches wide, and 4 inches thick. Individual plates were as thin as parchment paper. The plates weighed about 40–60 pounds.

The record on the gold plates included teachings of prophets who lived in the ancient Americas. Joseph Smith translated the record into what is now known as the Book of Mormon. The greatest event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal visit of the Lord Jesus Christ to the people in the Americas.

About 300 years after Jesus Christ appeared in the Americas, Mormon, an ancient prophet-historian, abridged the record and gave the gold plates to his son Moroni. That same Moroni hid the record in the hill and later appeared to Joseph Smith in 1823.
