Why Were Some Books Left Out of the Bible?

There were tons of books written about Jesus in the early days of Christianity, but many aren’t in the Bible. Why is that? Was there an attempt to suppress the truth on the part of the Church? Are there missing secret books that shed new truth on the life of Jesus? What about the Gnostic Gospels like the Gospel of Thomas?
