The best fire starter you’ll find in the woods

Our favorite fire starter in the North Idaho woods? It’s the one you can peel right off the tree.
If you’re looking for a reliable tinder source for your campfire, burn pile or wood stove – even on a damp day or with damp wood – our favorite is Paper Birch.
That thin, papery layer of bark contains natural oils and resins that make it highly flammable. It lights fast and holds a flame long enough to get your kindling going, even if everything else is wet.
But don’t peel bark off a live tree trunk! I remember getting scolded for that as an impulsive kiddo. Always look for a fallen deadwood (like the log here) or use pieces that are naturally peeling off an already dead tree.
